Wedding Engagement & Anniversary Food Memories

I28135-2004Jul30LUS Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth celebrated their wedding anniversary today as they do each year at Wendy's, a fast-food burger chain. Apparently that's where the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Edwards and his wife are campaigning in Pennsylvania and New York, so they stopped at a Wendy's in Newburgh for their annual rite.

Here's a brief report from the NYTimes:

"When the Kerry-Edwards caravan arrived in Scranton at midday, Mr. Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, stopped and had lunch at a Wendy's restaurant to mark their 27th wedding anniversary, as they always have, because Mr. Edwards proposed to his wife at a Wendy's."

So was it Scranton or Newburgh? The Times says Scranton, the Post has it as Newburgh. See the photo, courtesy of the Post.

Where did you get engaged? Do you have any memories of the meal you had on that occasion? Do you have any dining or food traditions associated with your engagement of wedding anniversary? Please leave your comments below and join our conversation.

I know I will probably get caught in your spam filter for commenting on a post this ancient, but I heard an interview with Elizabeth Edwards promoting her new memoir on a local Boston NPR show (On Point) last night, and she mentioned that the Heinz-Kerrys actually had a 5-course meal delivered to their bus after the Wendy's trip. Apparently they had never eaten at a Wendy's before, and were playing it safe in case they found it too repulsive to their patrician palates. However, Teresa found the chili "not bad" and said that it must have been made with Heinz products.

PS: Terri and I ate at The Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth, NH, following our engagement, and inevitably talk about our engagement day when we go back there.

Great news, Ezra--the Heinz-Kerry couple with gustatory backup. Thanks!
