Farmers Diner: serving local

Farmers Diner based in Barre, Vermont is an inexpensive 60-seat reastaurant that features 70% of its food is produced locally.  Local is in, according to Fast Times Magazine, Nov 2004.  Organic as a label has been watered down.  But locally produced food can be more easily investigated.  Tod Murphy hopes to expand his Farmers Diner to 1,000 outlets across America.  Everything, including meat, has to be produced within a 60 mile radius.

Happy Thanksgiving.

John R Bruno, New Orleans Fruit Vendor

John R Bruno sold fresh produce from the back of his truck in New Orlean's French Quarter for thirty years.  He passed away recently at the age of  95.  We came across his story in the Times-Picayune.  We are on the road researching food heritage sites.

Mr. Bruno got into the business by an act of patience and good will.  He stopped to pay a bill at the bank.  When he returned to his truck which was full of produce at the time, a line of customers had formed.  Bruno recalled, "I thought of how nice all those people were...they could have just taken the fruit from the unattended truck, but waited to pay for it.  I just couldn't turn them down."  He became a street vendor and a city institution.  Several times local residents and merchants supported him when the city wanted to eliminate curbside vindors.

Do you have a favorite street side food vendor story or recollection?

PeaceWorks

Daniel Lubetzky's PeaceWorks helps solve world problems through marketing sun-dried tomato spreads and coconut milk.

PeaceWorks weaves a profitable web of businesses between former enemies in hopes they can learn to live together.  For instance, the coconut milk is a venture spanning Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka.   And the tomato spread links jars made in Egypt, tomatoes from Turkey, and olive oil from Palestine.  Lubetsky markets the product in the USA.

Bread for the World

Bread for the World is worth knowing about and possibly supporting. They'll get you up to date on global hunger issues with links to local concerns as well. There are lots of links to other interesting organizations taking on the same issue. For instance here is a link to the local New Mexico Bread for the World chapter.

In this Thanksgiving season, many food banks are having important food drives  and fundraisers. We'll post more links to these later.
