Patrick Deuel: surgery saves half ton man
Patrick Deuel is recovering from obesity surgery to reduce the size of his stomach. The 42 year old former restaurant manager topped the scale at 1,072 pounds prior to checking into a Sioux Falls hospital. He had been bed-ridden for months and has been obese all his life. His aim is to take a walk outside with his wife by Valentine's Day.
Here are some links on obesity and obesity surgery.

man...by 200 pounds, I would have noticed I had a problem...

Son, you are a BIG ONE! I will have to talk to St. Peter and let him know he will have to make the Pearly Gates bigger for you, just in case. Love...

Just because someone has completely lost all self control when it comes to food that they weigh over 1,000 pounds doens't mean you guys should treat him like he's not human. Your lack of self control in making such "fat guy" comments and jokes here is just as bad as his lack of self control with eating.

Hey, Hey, Hey. I'ts FAAAAT ALBERT! ...Dude, even I'M not that huge. Seriously, come on, lay off the Twinkies man and get your ass on a treadmill or something. Please don't fall while attempting to exercise though, you might cause an earthquake that would wipe out half the human population.

Keep it real... Jesus loves us no matter what.

Patrick, may God be with you through your recovery.

Your comments against Patrick Deuel are pathetic and childish. The fact that another person is bigger than you is absolutely no reason to be so disgusting. Where is your decency? I'm sure that those of you who are insensitive enough to be so degrading don't care what I think, but shame on you. I'm sure you wouldn't want strangers mocking you for your flaws.
Posted by: Liz | January 05, 2005 at 04:15 PM
all of you who find it so enjoyable to mock this man should at least take note that, even if it may seem a bit late to many of us, is actually taking control of his life now and doing something about his weight.
besides that, your joy of semi-anonymously mocking a stranger on the internet shows more about your own emotional issues than it does about his weight issues.

I agree, what cowards mocking a beautiful human being. How pathetic and sick. Karma Cameleon boys.. keep on making jokes ;-)

I am very proud of you. Best of luck as you start a new life.

Patrick,
I wish these comments had a moderator that screened out all the hateful nonsense I just read below. I agree with the many comments SHAMING those insensitive cowards (don't see your full names and pictures on this site).
A great BIG THANK YOU for being brave enough to do press interviews and share your story for the benefit of others. Through efforts such as this site, I'm sure you draw much hurtful criticsm, but at the same time you help bring inspiration and hope to so many others. Sharing your story for the sake of others and enduring the scorn of the heartless is a truly Christ-like action. Prayers be with you as you push towards your personal goals.
God bless!

Do people actually think that when commenting here they are commenting TO Patrick Deuel? Good heavens. And seriously he may be fat but so what? Fat is just another way to look - this "born again christian" shit is what scares me.

Fat and bald. Boy you must have been bad in a past life.

I think we have to reexamine whether or not Patrick Deuel is a real success story. This man lost complete control of his life through his eating and exercise habits. He only began to drop weight when forced to do so by the specter of death by morbid obesity or obesity related causes, such as the chest being so heavy that he would become literally unable to breathe.
Furthermore, losing a vast quantity of weight through stomach reduction surgery, whether for cosmetic reasons or for health reasons does not seem to me to be a success. Remember, he only got to that point after allowing his weight to balloon to over 1000 pounds.
While I congratulate Patrick on his weight loss, I still chide him for his loss of control and willingness to let himself go to the point of threatening his life. This is not a success story- it is a warning to those of us who need to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
On another note, those who choose to denigrate Patrick because of his battle with his weight are pathetically immature and puerile. These comments are indicative of a level of cowardice not seen sine the lion from the Wizard of Oz. Shame on you.

Honestly, I have little respect for someone who lets themselves get that huge. Gluttony is indeed a sin. Shame on Patrick for his lack of self control, and shame on Mr. "annonymous" above, although I agree with his viewpoints, he cannot be so naive as to assume that someone such as Patrick would not be ridiculed. As for cowardice, you are wrong. These people are not cowards they simply have no respect.

This forum is unbelieveable. I'm so grateful that I'm teaching my own children how to behave with respect toward other human beings. My six- and nine-year old behave better than you pathetic people! I certainly hope this Patrick never takes a look at this site. I happened to click on the link because I thought it was totally cool that he's got people willing to help him get over this phase in his life. People who are willing to improve their situations are to be commended with praise, not ridicule, you jerks. I've never been overweight but I have sympathy for those who have such extremes to deal with. Don't bother replying to my note because I won't be back to read your disparaging comments. All the others who wrote as adults, I raise my glass to you.

Dear Patrick, God bless you and you are given a chance of your life to live it to the fullest. Seize it! And I hope by Valentine's day, you'd have your wish come true. Keep on working and never lose faith and hope in whatever that you do now. I wish you all the best! -peace-

Ok, I am an overweight female and what people out there don't realize is this... some people cannot help their weight, yes some people can over eat and gain alot but some cannot help it. You people out there that are making fun of this poor man are sickening! God accepts us all, what if God didnt like skinny people ever think of that? And one thing i wonder is this, the people that have such ugly nerve to make fun of this poor man, are you overweight yourselves? Power to ya Patrick, may god be with you during your recovery. ignore all the mean hated people out there, they have no heart.

WTG Patrick I just read a news clip about how your doing today. Your are a very fine young man who has a lot of life left in him thank you for sharing your story with us.

I agree that you should have done something about this problem before it got so bad, but I a happy that you finally realized that you needed help. If you have been over weight since 6th grade then maybe your parents should have done something to remedy this problem while you were younger and they were taking care of you. I am happy that you are I born again Christian! God does love us all no matter what we look like, and he also forgives us for our sins. Keep up the good work Patrick and I know that you will gain control of your weight! I along with many others respect you for coming out into the open and sharing your story with us. I hope that it will bring light to people that are over weight. I do not think that every person needs to be supermodel skinny! I am not! I personally am five eight and weigh 145 pounds. I wear a size 9 in clothes, and am not anorexic or do not have an eating disorder. But I know the health risks that go along with obesity and I have made a vow that I will never be over weight! I am right in the middle were I will be healthy! As for everyone that wrote the horrible things to you, I would like to apologize on their behave and say that I am sorry that people can say such mean things and make a mockery out of you and your believes…God bless you Patrick and keep working. I hope you meet your goal soon! xoxo
