Yeah, right. In quotes, that's what it says on a 12 oz carton of grape tomatoes I bought recently. Yep, from Mexico, and distributed by Legend Distributing, Glendale, AZ. ( Not local!)
Anyway under those statements it reads, " Coated with food grade petroleum-based wax to maintain freshness." Does not "maintain freshness" imply "preservatives?"
OK. So I Googled the wax and was oh so reassured to learn that the Bush-era FDA says it is healthy for humans to eat. ( And it's applied in tiny amounts, people, so...) The very same FDA that ignored repeated nasty inspection reports re the Peanut Corp of America plant in Blakely, GA.
I am returning the 'maters. I should have read the fine print in any case. And I should have snagged some cans of organic toms instead.
Guilt.
NB Not all FDA employees are snakes and charlatans. Their budgets have been cut, they don't have enough inspectors, and so on. Grrr..........

Thanks for all the great info! I'm still new to Twitter and this was so helpful! I was wondering how it works when you want to respond to something somebody said.

That is great, the preservatives are bad for our health.

Your girl Mary :)

I agree. FDA is more of regulations under pressure by the..who else, those food companies who have minimal concern o our health. oh well. money can buy almost everything.

I am beginning to really lose all faith and credibility in the FDA. It seems to me that instead of focusing their efforts on protecting the general public they are in-turn being influenced by corporate agenda and special interest. I take everything they say with a grain of salt.

I think not all food preservatives are harmful. Research shows that majority of food additives and preservatives are safe. It all depends on the individual's sensitivity to the chemicals. But yes the FDA has made many mistakes in their announcements and decrees so we should take extra precautions in eating in accordance with our lifestyle.
