Idly casting her eyes across an array of rejected kitchen items at her local Goodwill recently, Foodie noted a small boxed item called EggCuber. And its banner headline , on all four sides of the box, was "makes a square egg." But why do I want a square egg, Foodie wondered.
Foodie carefully read the directions, especially noting direction # 2: "Screw top down until egg becomes square. ( Best results if Egg Cuber has been chilled.)" Mind you, Direction # 1 stressed the requirement of a "warm, peeled hard boiled egg."
So one must take a warm egg and screw it with a chilled Cuber. My, my.
But why do I want a square egg, Foodie wondered, again.
One panel of the box pictured a primitively drawn, puzzled chicken, gazing down at the square egg she has just produced. The hen comments : "?#!! OUCH!"
Yes, friends, Foodie bought the golden plastic EggCuber for 99 cents, and walked out to her car having vague thoughts of creating an homage to the Twin Towers in boiled egg.

When you have a Seder or just throw a party, you can make a beautiful egg pyramid (and carve little slaves out of carrots with parsley hair, etc…).

We stumbled across this website the other day when our shipment of egg cubers came in. They are flying off the shelves and we love cooking up square eggs for our customers. Just wanted to let you know that they're still available and people think they're the best things ever.

i have one of these but lost the directions - can you post them? the square egg is useful for simple and elegant presentation of food. you can even include pretty little flowers in the press, which will get embedded on the egg. sweet!

Actually these things are amazing. I've been giving them as my "stock" gift to new friends for years. I ask you all: How would you ever make a successful Egg Igloo without cubed eggs? You still need toothpicks and all that if you want your igloo to keep its shape over the course of a party, but nonetheless...
Also, for anyone out there of or near the Jewish persuasion (or anyone who celebrates Passover, for that matter), this is an indispensable tool during Passover. When you have a Seder or just throw a party, you can make a beautiful egg pyramid (and carve little slaves out of carrots with parsley hair, etc…).
I gave one of these to a friend a number of years ago and told her about the egg pyramid idea. For about 5 years now, she's had a huge party...about 200 people...and every year she makes 2-4 egg pyramids. It really sets the mood, I'll tell ya that much!
I've kept my supply up by purchasing them at my local "World Market", but I just looked online and they don't sell them there. Gosh...I hope they still stock them in the stores - yikes!

The egg cuber is imported by cusine international, gistributed by scandicrafts inc of Camarillo Ca. 93011.
It is great fun to make a batch of pickled eggs, throw in a few if the square eggs. Tell everyone that asks they are Platypuss eggs. You'd be suprised how many folks won't touch em.
Later and have fun. J.

So that's what that thing is. I found one in a box of miscellaneous stuff I've been carting from apartment to apartment for years, and couldn't quite recall what it would be.
Incidentally, there's a nice overview of the successful production of a cubic egg here (or click my name):

Foodie must confess that she has not yet attempted to square an egg, though her houseguest and pal since the giggly days of 6th grade is egging her on....Maybe today.

I gave my opinion, sort of, over on my blog, but I have to know, did you use this? What happened? Give over, girl!

Oh! I guess you are right. But for years I had an egg slicer gizmo that did the same thing, albeit egg shaped.....

I think the main reason people want square eggs is that they slice into even slices. If that is of importance to you than this is probably an invaluable device!
